I've read all the Gansett books and that is the only gripe I have with this book and why it didn't get 5 stars from me. I think anyone who comes to the 23rd book having read most/all of the previous books gets a little tired of having to read the characters' back stories. Every. Single. Time. Admittedly, their story gets condensed to one or two lines, but it gets old to hear that Sarah Lawry Grandchampion lived a hellish life before finding her happiness or that Laura McCarthy's husband continued to date after their wedding. Those of us who've read all the books have read those lines over and over and over again.I loved "catching up" with all the storylines, though some advanced the stories more than others. Deacon really loves Julia; got it. Chloe's RA is really bad, but the new meds seem to be working. Weaker than other stories. And what's with this "heat wave"? 94 degrees may be really hot for Gansett but in other parts of the country, that's called Summer. Further, I distinctly remember that at least some buildings on Gansett (such as the McCarthy hotel) don't have a/c (or even tv), so lack of power wouldn't be any difference in that respect.I look forward to reading the next book, but I do wish we could stop with the explanations about each character from their previous story. I am a big fan of yours and have all the Fatal and Gansett books and the standalone books. This book was sooo good with all the updates and storylines. With Oliver and Dara, the first and only African Americans featured in a Gansett book ( I apologize in advance if I am wrong) they were more of just a blip in the story. They should have a book totally dedicated to them just like all the other couples. Again, I apologize in advance if you are going to do one but it was a letdown for me because I was so excited about it. Did you add them due to the climate of the country today or will you really develop a story about them that will do justice like all the other books. Yes, I am African American and an avid reader of your books.
