Ebook About
This “delicious take on the one percent in our nation’s capital” (Town & Country) and clever combination of The Bonfire of the Vanities and The Nest explores what Washington, DC’s high society members do behind the closed doors of their stately homes. They are the families considered worthy of a listing in the exclusive Green Book—a discriminative diary created by the niece of Edith Roosevelt’s social secretary. Their aristocratic bloodlines are woven into the very fabric of Washington—generation after generation. Their old money and manner lurk through the cobblestone streets of Georgetown, Kalorama, and Capitol Hill. They only socialize within their inner circle, turning a blind eye to those who come and go on the political merry-go-round. These parents and their children live in gilded existences of power and privilege. But what they have failed to understand is that the world is changing. And when the family of one of their own is held hostage and brutally murdered, everything about their legacy is called into question in this unputdownable novel that “combines social satire with moral outrage to offer a masterfully crafted, absorbing read that can simply entertain on one level and provoke reasoned discourse on another” (Booklist, starred review).

Book The Cave Dwellers Review :

What a ride! I know nothing about the elite except as portrayed in movies, being the "commoner" that I am. Wink wink! Ms. Mc Dowell's insights are only shocking in that all those parodies and comedies in movies of the rich are true...albeit a work of fiction. It reminds me of the Real Housewives franchises in that these rich, privileged people think we envy them, but really what we see are such sad, shallow lives. The storytelling is quick paced like a fun, salacious book but then you realize it is more than that. There is historical and current context, vibrant descriptions of real Washington D.C. landmarks as backdrops to fictional characters who embody real life issues as characters - privilege, racism, stereotyping, wealth, elitism, ignorance, adolescence and all the dangers and traps that come with them. The book is not preachy nor predictable as we journey along mostly through the questioning and opening eyes of the young Bunny, whose views unravel and adjust to some criminal, tragic, and everyday events. Included is a much needed character tree. Enjoy!
This was a well written book but the author is clearly suffering from a massive case of white guilt (further confirmed in the author's note). I could have done without the one-sided preaching that never really went anywhere. I finished this book feeling like it didn't have much of an ending and that every child of privilege is supposed to feel bad about it because their families are a bunch of evil racists.Edit: I should have given myself more time before rushing into a review. After giving myself time to think about this book I realized that I had a lot of thoughts about the style, content and characters that really affected my opinion. This review does contain SPOILERS.The author can clearly write. She can also research and stick pertinent historical information into chapters to underscore her story. However, I realize that for me, her wordsmithing and lofty technique masks a lot of flaws in the actual writing. The characters are all caricatures of DC families. Every. Last. One. Here's your social climber married to philandering senator with awful children, angry abusive military guy with weak wife and bullied child, old money made on the backs of slaves, angsty teen digging into issues, token African American kid, shady Russian kid, jock bully, horrible popular girl- you get the gist. The plot goes off in several directions - social climbing, neglected kids who party & do drugs, damaged girl who self harms, problems in the prison system, racism, class privilege- it has everything you could hope for...AND MORE!!!!. Don't forget the incidental murder in the very beginning that never actually goes anywhere. There are way too many catalysts for action and not a single resolution. What happens to any of these people? Who cares!! The book is like a really long first episode of DC Gossip Girl with style masquerading as substance. Colossal waste of time but I didn't actually know it until I thought about it for a day and realized this was a clump of dirt spray painted gold & handed to me on a crystal platter. 2.5 stars and I will probably skip this author in the future.
